Kelsey Sham in Concert
February 28 @ 2 pm

See below for more details about this special event!
Mark Your Calendars: February 28
On Sunday, February 28 at 2 pm, Houston native and Rice University harpist Kelsey Sham will perform a special recital for the chapter. This concert will exclusively feature music written by people of color, including harpist and composer Brandee Younger, Syrian composer Kinan Azmeh, and more. This virtual event is FREE to members of the chapter and $10 for non-members. Click here to register for the event. Ticket holders will receive a link for the event on February 28.
Harpist Kelsey Sham is currently pursuing her graduate studies at Rice University and completed her undergraduate degree at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where she also earned a minor in Music History. A dedicated orchestral musician, Ms. Sham has performed with both classical and contemporary ensembles, and has worked to promote new music and art installations. As a passionate advocate for arts education, she currently maintains a private studio and has worked with Young Audiences of Houston to increase accessibility of the fine arts to underserved schools. In 2019, she was named a Fulbright semi-finalist for her proposal on multidisciplinary performance to merge modern Taiwanese culture and classical harp, and also was awarded the Sviatoslav Richter Fund for Music Outreach, with which she introduced folk music to over 100 children in the Greater Houston area. Most recently, she was named a Young Artist for Da Camera of Houston, and is currently conducting virtual workshops on the music of people of color.
A Message from the Harp Doc
Peter Wiley, master harp technician, has not yet determined the date for his annual trip to Houston yet. Regularly scheduled for late winter, his trip is pending improvements to the pandemic. He has shared the following message:

I understand that concern over your harps condition can cause some anxiety.  The greater part of regular harp service (regulation) involves three things: 1. Intonation regulation (pitch control) 2. Noise regulation (buzz) 3. Pedal regulation including felt replacement.
  1. Intonation  If your harp is experiencing pitch problems they might not actually be from the hardware regulation.  It might be from the string.  Nylon strings are by far the biggest pitch infection on any pedal harp.  Change them, I bet much of the pitch problem there will improve.
  2. Noise   Buzzing is of course disturbing.  I will try to get a video posted up on how to analyze such problems.  If needed I am happy to consult with my harpists via email or video.
  3. Pedals  Some problems with pedals can be resolved via video.  If you are really in need and want to change you pedal felts there is an instructional video on my YouTube Channel.  Watch it 2 or 3 times before you get going.  Subscribe and you will get notifications on new uploaded videos.
