A Message From Our President

Dear Harpists,

The new year is always exciting, but this year it feels particularly good to turn the calendar over to a new and hopeful year! Are you setting some “harp resolutions” for yourself? It is a great time to set a goal to learn that new piece, do that competition (Milligan 2021!), or master that technique. I hope the GHC can help you along the way with harp events and programming. I especially want to invite you to our annual New Year’s Party (details below), which this year will be held on Zoom. Looking forward to “seeing” you there, and hearing about your harp goals for 2021. Cheers to a new year full of harp in Houston!

Hope Cowan

This continues our long-standing tradition of ringing in the new year together. We are looking forward to some harp games and trivia, chatting about harp goals and plans, and spending some time in community together. A Zoom link will be sent out closer to the date. We hope you’ll join us a week from Sunday with your favorite beverage 🙂
A Message from the Harp Doc
Peter Wiley, master harp technician, has not yet determined the date for his annual trip to Houston. Regularly scheduled for late winter, his trip is pending improvements to the pandemic. He has shared the following message:

I understand that concern over your harps condition can cause some anxiety.  The greater part of regular harp service (regulation) involves three things: 1. Intonation regulation (pitch control) 2. Noise regulation (buzz) 3. Pedal regulation including felt replacement.
  1. Intonation  If your harp is experiencing pitch problems they might not actually be from the hardware regulation.  It might be from the string.  Nylon strings are by far the biggest pitch infection on any pedal harp.  Change them, I bet much of the pitch problem there will improve.
  2. Noise   Buzzing is of course disturbing.  I will try to get a video posted up on how to analyze such problems.  If needed I am happy to consult with my harpists via email or video.
  3. Pedals  Some problems with pedals can be resolved via video.  If you are really in need and want to change you pedal felts there is an instructional video on my YouTube Channel.  Watch it 2 or 3 times before you get going.  Subscribe and you will get notifications on new uploaded videos.
The Milligan Competition is Here!
The GHC is pleased to announce that the 2021 Mildred Milligan Scholarship Competition will be held on Sunday, April 25th, 2021. The competition is open to beginning through college level harp students. Students and their teachers must be members of the GHC to participate. An in-person competition is planned for the moment with the possibility of going virtual. Registration is NOW OPEN!
