A Message From Our President

|
Hello harpists,
Summertime is here, and even though our lives have been turned upside down by Covid19, the seasons keep turning, and the Houston heat and humidity are present as always. I hope you all find some time this summer to learn new music, listen to some fantastic harp playing (even if just virtually), and connect with our harp community. The GHC board will be planning next season’s events and activities, so now is a great time to get involved. We could use more hands on deck, so please email me (hope.k.cowan@gmail.com) or call me (507-993-4969) if you have any ideas for programming, or would like to help out with future events. Also send us any videos, livestreams, driveway concerts, or anything else you are up to! We love to celebrate the creativity and talent of our chapter members. I am looking forward to seeing you all in person at some point, and in the meantime, stay healthy and enjoy the summer!

Check out this article written by Salvi Harps on how to safely care for your harp and prevent the possible of spreading Covid-19 through contact with an infected surface.
A highlight from the article and a gentle reminder:
“As specialist studies have shown and the World Health Organization confirms and recommends, the main rule of prevention of contagion from any type of virus is hand hygiene. Before and after coming into contact with the harp, hands must be washed thoroughly with soap and water, scrubbing scrupulously for at least 40 seconds, or sanitized with a common disinfectant gel with a minimum alcohol base of 60%. Also avoid touching your mouth, eyes and nose before and after playing the harp.”

Alaina (harp) and Brian Graiser (percussion) have wrapped their first season of REFLECTV. For the season finale, the duo performed the two “viewer’s choice” favorites, Maurice Ravel’s “Rigaudon” from “Tombeau de Couperin” and an encore of Claude Debussy’s “Clair de Lune” from “Suite Bergamasque.”

Our chapter recital, originally scheduled for April 19, has been postponed. The new date is August 30th at 3 pm at St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church (8915 Timberside Dr, Houston, TX 77025). This fun, non-competitive performance opportunity is open to harp students grades K–12. Students and their teachers must be current members of the GHC of the AHS. To become a member, visit https://houstonharpists.com/join/. Each student should prepare one piece (or movement) of their choice to share with their peers, friends, and family. A memorized performance is preferred, but not required. Any questions and comments can be directed to Hope Cowan at hope.k.cowan@gmail.com or 507-993-4969. Please mark your calendars and save the date for what will be a truly fantastic event.
