A Message From Our President
Hello Harpists!
I hope all of you made it through the last few weeks of wild weather and power/water outages. This has been an exceptionally hard year in Houston, and I am grateful for this community. The Milligan Committee met a few weeks ago and made the difficult decision to change the 2021 competition to a virtual format. This will allow all of us to stay safe and healthy, while still giving the students a valuable competition experience and feedback from professional harpists. The registration deadline of March 15th is rapidly approaching, so sign up now!

On Sunday, February 28 at 2 pm, harpist Kelsey Sham performed a phenomenal virtual recital for the chapter. Thanks to the 40 people who tuned in; it was a huge success! Scroll down for some photos and the concert program.

A Note on Managing Harps After the Storm
Peter Wiley, master harp technician, shared these thoughts regarding power outages and winter weather:
Keep your instrument in its case a day or two after heat comes back up. Do not try to tune it right away, but let it acclimate slowly to the new temperature.
Get more tips and find more ways to plug into our community by joining our harp group on Facebook here. Please note: with power outages out of our control, the best thing you can do is keep levers down/pedals up, cover it in its cases (add blankets if you can), and move it away from windows and any drafts.
The GHC Board hopes you are safe and well, and that your homes and harps are as well.

Important: Milligan Update
After careful consideration, the Milligan committee has decided to change the 2021 Mildred Milligan Competition to a virtual format. The safety of our competitors, judges, and harp community is our highest priority, and we feel that a virtual competition will best allow us to encourage young harpists while keeping everyone safe during these challenging times.
Competitors will be asked to video record themselves playing their two pieces, and submit those videos to the competition chairperson (Naomi Hoffmeyer) by April 25th, 2021. Specific details about video submission and tips for successful recording can be found on the GHC website.
