A Message From Our President

Hello harpists! I hope your 2020 is off to a great start.  Personally, I am not sure where January went, but hopefully February will also be a productive and busy month! Please read through all the opportunities listed below, and I hope to see you at some of the events. For our school–aged students: please mark your calendars and start planning what to play on our student recital in April. We are excited to feature you and showcase your talents.

The Fantasticks

Jan. 24–March 15
Stages Repertory Theatre
Naomi Hoffmeyer and Emily Klein are the featured harpists in this whimsical tale of young lovers, meddling parents, and a bond that matures in adversity.

Phil Kramer Recital

Feb. 7 at 7:30 pm
New Hope Lutheran Church
Harpist Hope Cowan and tenor Zach Averyt perform a recital of British art songs featuring works by Britten, Purcell, Dowland, Quilter, and Vaughan Williams.

The Promise of Spring

Feb. 15 at 7:30 pm
Kinsmen Lutheran Church
Harpist Stephanie Gustafson performs works by Debussy, Al-Zand, Aguila, Beaser, and Lowry with the Lagniappe Trio (flute, viola, and harp). 

Stop, Look, and Listen

Feb. 22 at 3 pm
The Menil Collection
Harpist Hope Cowan performs two chamber works along with other Da Camera Young Artists.  Free and open to the public! 
Bridget Kibbey: 2/24 and 2/25
Harpist Bridget Kibbey will be performing Folk Inspirations on February 24th and 25th as part of Da Camera of Houston’s concert series at the Menil Collection. She is an amazing, dynamic performer, and this is not a concert to miss! Da Camera is offering a special 20% discount for members of the GHC of the AHS. Use coupon code HARP20 when buying tickets. Seating is limited, so buy tickets soon. Tuesday night has more availability. Huge thanks to Da Camera for the special harp promotion! 
Save the Date: April 19, 2020
Our GHC Student Recital is scheduled for April 19th, 3:00pm, at St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church (8915 Timberside Dr, Houston, TX 77025). This fun, non-competitive performance opportunity is open to harp students grades K–12.  Students and their teachers must be current members of the GHC of the AHS. To become a member, visit https://houstonharpists.com/join/. Each student should prepare one piece (or movement) of their choice to share with their peers, friends, and family. A memorized performance is preferred, but not required. A celebratory reception will be held afterward. AFA Summer Music Festival
Application and Audition Information coming February 2020

Middle School Program June 6-20, 20205th–8th grade
Work with harp faculty Emily Klein at the High School for Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA) in brand-new facilities. Daily orchestra, harp ensemble, and class piano are part of a selection of class offerings for students. A master teacher will provide a special master class for students to perform a solo. Camp will culminate with a harp ensemble and orchestra concert both taking place at HSPVA.

High School Program June 22 to July 11, 2020advanced 8th–12th grade
Work with harp faculty Emily Klein at the High School for Performing and Visual Arts in downtown Houston. Daily orchestra, harp ensemble, and music electives are part of a selection of class offerings for students. Students will be joined by a master teacher one day of camp for solo and harp ensemble coaching. Two orchestra concerts take place, one at Miller Outdoor Theatre and one at HSPVA, in addition to a chamber music concert featuring the harp ensemble.

Audition Requirements for both programs: 2 contrasting pieces demonstrating the student’s ability. Pedal harps are provided at camp. Students are welcome to bring their instruments to camp.
Houston Summer Harp Festival

Register now for the 2020 Houston Summer Harp Festival! July 6th-11th. Featuring 3 levels of harp ensembles, workshops, masterclass, private lessons, performances, and more.  We offer a fun, educational, and non-competitive environment for learning about the harp and its history, and making music and new friends. Welcoming 6th—graduating 12th grade lever and pedal harpists who have a minimum of 6 months of previous instruction on the harp and the ability to read treble and bass clef. 


Registration Deadline: May 24th, 2020
Scholarships available. Scholarship Deadline: May 10th, 2020
On-campus housing available. Rental harps available.
